In the 6th century, Western monasticism was already well developed with a multitude of different Rules (Saint Martin, Saint Columban, etc.), but the balanced qualities and accuracy of the Rule of Saint Benedict ensured that it became the dominant one. The Benedictine monasticism of Cluny spread throughout Western Europe until the 11th century.
