Birth of cenobitism

Initially in an eremitic form, the monks were scattered across the desert of Egypt, living in cells built with their own hands.

Saint Anthony the Great (≈251-356) and Saint Pachomius (≈292-348) united them. Alongside this solitary life, which persisted, Saint Pachomius founded, around 320, the first cenobitic monasteries, for monks who live in community.
