End of the Roman persecutions.
Monastic life was born in the Middle East at the end of the Roman Empire’s persecutions, around the 3rd century. Being a disciple of Jesus Christ had become an advantage. In response, young Egyptians rose up and withdrew into the desert, seeking total solitude in order to remain faithful to the demands of their baptism and to the teachings of the Gospel. They numbered in the thousands.
